Density · Volume · Mass

Quick conversion via m = ρV. Lock two fields and the third updates as you type.

How to use this tool

Convert between the mass, volume, and density of a substance. Fill in any two and the third is calculated for you, handy for turning a volume of liquid into a weight, or vice versa.

What to enter

  • Mass: the weight, in grams.
  • Volume: the volume, in millilitres.
  • Density (ρ): mass per millilitre, g/mL. Water is 1.00, ethanol 0.789, mercury 13.55. Enter the two you know and leave the third blank.

Reading the result

All three quantities are shown, with the one you left blank now filled in, plus the specific gravity (density relative to water). Use it to weigh out a liquid by volume or predict how much a given volume will weigh.

Worked example

Leave mass blank, enter volume 50 mL and density 0.789 (ethanol): the mass resolves to 39.45 g.

Inputs

Leave any one field blank, that one will compute. Common densities: water 1.00, ethanol 0.789, mercury 13.55.

Result

The field you left blank is now filled in. Specific gravity is the density expressed relative to water (1.00 g/mL), above 1 sinks, below 1 floats.

Methodology

Density relates mass and volume via m = ρV. Set any two, the third is determined. Specific gravity (water-referenced) is included for convenience.
